How often do you wake up in the morning thinking, “I can’t wait to get into work because I’m going to make money today?”
Of course you have to be paid for what you do. In our society, we can’t survive without income. And you have to feel like you’re paid fairly, or your motivation will sag. But that’s quite different from saying that that thought – “I’m going to be paid fairly today!” – is what motivates you to work well—day by day, hour by hour.
When you wake up tomorrow morning, ask yourself: what is the one thing that could change at work – that I might have some influence over – that would make me more energized, more motivated, at work?
And if you’re a boss, ask your reports that question. And once you have the answer, take some steps toward making that change happen.
